It sounds counter-intuitive: how can people living near the equator, bathed in year-round sunshine, be deficient in the 'sunshine vitamin'? Yet studies across Kenya and Tanzania consistently show that a significant portion of the population has sub-optimal Vitamin D levels.
The primary reason is melanin. Darker skin contains more melanin, which acts as a natural sunscreen. While this provides excellent protection against UV damage and skin cancer, it also reduces the skin's ability to synthesise Vitamin D from sunlight by up to 50%.
Modern lifestyles compound the problem. Urbanisation means more time spent indoors — in offices, cars, and shopping centres. Even in rural areas, clothing that covers most of the body limits sun exposure to the skin.
Diet plays a role too. Vitamin D is found naturally in very few foods: oily fish, egg yolks, and liver. Fortified dairy products help, but they're not universally consumed across East Africa.
The consequences of deficiency are far-reaching. Beyond weakened bones, low Vitamin D is linked to impaired immune function, fatigue, mood disturbances, and increased risk of chronic diseases.
The fix is straightforward. A daily Vitamin D3 supplement of 1,000–2,000 IU, combined with 10–15 minutes of midday sun exposure on bare skin, can restore and maintain healthy levels for most adults.
