Vitamin D3
Cholecalciferol
The 'sunshine vitamin' essential for calcium absorption, bone mineralisation, and immune regulation. Despite abundant sunlight in East Africa, modern indoor lifestyles have made deficiency surprisingly common.
What the Research Shows
Martineau et al. Meta-analysis (2017)
Vitamin D supplementation reduced acute respiratory infections by 12% overall and by 70% in those with severe deficiency.
BMJ
Holick (2007)
Landmark review established vitamin D's role beyond bone health, including immune modulation and chronic disease prevention.
New England Journal of Medicine
Bischoff-Ferrari et al. (2005)
Meta-analysis showed vitamin D (700–800 IU/day) reduced hip fracture risk by 26% and non-vertebral fracture risk by 23%.

How It Works
Vitamin D3 is converted in the liver to 25-hydroxyvitamin D, then activated in the kidneys to 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (calcitriol). Calcitriol regulates calcium and phosphorus absorption in the gut, promotes bone mineralisation, and modulates both innate and adaptive immune responses. It activates antimicrobial peptides (cathelicidin, defensins) and regulates T-cell function.
